South LA Reads Iola Leroy

Frances E. W. Harper’s novel in one weekend beginning Saturday, October 17!

It’s a page-turning convention—South LA teens welcome this work by one of the most prominent African American women writers of the nineteenth century.  Meet special guests and support the USC NAI and Foshay seniors as they launch their study of Harper’s novel (1892) at the (Virtual) Annual Reading Marathon, 3-6PM PDT.

This year’s USC NAI seniors invite you to support the launch of their study of this year’s novel, Iola Leroy by Frances E.W. Harper, one of the most prominent African American women writers in the 19th century. Our launch event is a marathon reading this weekend to finish the book, with a synchronous portion on Saturday, October 17, 3-6PM PDT. Here’s our full schedule.

We hope to study the novel with the mentorship of leading scholars of early African-American literature and more, with a culminating digital creative endeavor at the conclusion of the unit.  We are inspired to take on Harper’s anti-racist book of the 19th century in light of the current movement to dismantle structural racism in the 21st.  Though we are in the midst of a pandemic, we continue to be excited to present our community with an excellent example of how Foshay students can bring rigorous literary works to life as part of an AP English Literature college-level curriculum.

Enjoy our forwarded digital invitation below, and if you are interested in joining us please RSVP by 10/16 for the Zoom code and more information. Please do make the seniors feel special by encouraging them on their endeavor this weekend!
